How is Duette Catheter Better than Traditional Foley Catheters?

Foley Catheter Duette Catheter
The exposed tip damages the bladder’s protective lining. Subsumed tip to prevent trauma
Drainage aspiration breaks down the lining and restricts fluid removal. Drainage eye is placed between balloons to prevent aspiration.
Causes bladder wall trauma 100% silicone is four times more effective compared to latex against bacterial colonization
Creates wound sites that are susceptible to infection

When to Use Double Balloon Foley Catheter?

Double-lumen Foley Catheter reduces detrimental events associated with catheterization, including:

  • Cystitis (inflammation of the bladder lining)
  • Chronic irritation of the bladder, which has been shown to increase the risk of bladder cancer between 8-10 percent
  • CAUTI and UTIs
  • Blockage of urine
  • Penetration and perforation of the bladder wall
  • Hematuria (blood in the urine)
  • Painful bladder spasms
  • Urine leakage around the Foley catheter
  • Increased degree of sepsis
  • Patient pain levels during catheterization

How To Use Duette Foley Catheter?

  • Examine the Poiesis catheter visually for any defects or surface deterioration before initiating use. Refrain from using the catheter if the packaging is opened or if any imperfections or surface issues are detected.
  • Ensure you have the necessary materials on hand: Two syringes, each containing 10 ml/cc of sterile water.
  • Wash hands before and after the procedure.

Duette Catheter Insertion

  • Place a Two-Way Foley Catheter following the institution’s instructions.
  • Use a 10ml/cc syringe for the first step, inserting it into the inflation/deflation port marked with a color corresponding to the size (excluding Black). Gently push the syringe to fill the proximal retention balloon with around 10ml/cc of sterile water. Remove the syringe.
  • For the second step, take another 10ml/cc syringe and insert it into the Black color-coded inflation/deflation port. Slowly press the syringe plunger to fill the distal balloon with about 5ml/cc of sterile water. Remove the syringe afterward.

Catheter Removal

  • Gently let the air out of the balloon by using a Luer slip syringe. Insert the syringe into the port labeled “Non-Black inflation/deflation” and let water flow into the syringe. Be careful not to use too much force, just enough to keep the syringe in place. If the balloon doesn’t deflate easily, you may need to pull on the syringe gently.
  • After emptying the syringe, put it into the port labeled “Black inflation/deflation” and repeat the deflation process.
  • Follow the guidelines to remove the dual balloon Foley catheter.

Emptying the Drainage Bag

  • Wash hands using soap and warm water.
  • Remove the bag drainage tube from its protective pouch.
  • Unclamp and drain into the toilet.
  • Close the clamp and replace the tube in its pouch when the bag is empty.

Cautions:

  • Forceful inhalation could obstruct the inflation passage, hindering balloon deflation. If deflation doesn’t occur, follow institution protocol to cut off the valve arm. If unsuccessful, seek assistance from a healthcare professional.

  • Do not use needles. Maximum catheter inflation capacity with sterile water: 10 ml/cc per balloon.
  • Do not aspirate urine through the drainage funnel wall.

Warnings

  • Once used, the dual-balloon two-way Foley catheter may become a potential biohazard.
  • Handle and dispose of in accordance with the applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
